Why David Beckham Won’t Be Returning to the EPL
It’s been 8 years since David Beckham was plying his trade in the Premier League and despite turning 37 next May, the former England captain has plenty of admirers in the EPL.
It was back in September when ambitious Queens Park Rangers were the first EPL side to declare an interest in pursuing the possibility of signing Beckham. Whilst there is no doubt that QPR’s financial muscle would stretch to signing the midfielder, the move now appears to be more a statement of intent and ambition from the then newly appointed owner Tony Fernandes rather than a realistic destination of the former Manchester United man.
Having trained with Tottenham during the most recent MLS off season, Spurs would seem a natural fit for the London born star. As a schoolboy Beckham attended Tottenham Hotspur’s school of excellence and current manager Harry Redknapp is highly respectful of the current LA Galaxy midfielder’s professionalism, talent and determination both on and off the pitch. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would likely sanction a short term deal, based on the revenue that the high-profile signing would bring, but Redknapp himself has been keen to highlight the options he already has in midfield particularly on the right.
Romanticists will of course be hoping that Beckham returns to the Theatre of Dreams. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side this campaign is arguably lacking in the centre of midfield and the return of United’s former number 7 would provide an element of quality and class in the centre of the park. With the likes of Teddy Sheringham and Henrik Larsson, Ferguson has made some astute signings of players in the twilight of their career in the past, but the free transfer of Beckham looks an altogether more improbable move.
If Beckham does leave the LA Galaxy then the midfielder bowed out at the Home Depot Arena in perfect fashion after lifting the MLS Cup against Houston Dynamo recently in what looks likely to be his last game for the American side.
At 36, Beckham is still keen to play regularly at a high level and is desperate to pick up another winners medal before calling an end to his glittering career. Remaining at the Galaxy is still a possibility for Beckham who has been integral in his side’s recent performances and success. With the likes of Landon Donovan and former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane, the LA Galaxy are fancied to come close again next season, but the challenge of playing in a new league may excite Beckham.
Qatar backed PSG, therefore are the most likely destination for Beckham. Strong fancies for the Ligue 1 title, the French side would not even flinch at the star’s demands. Beckham would likely pick up a good level of game time in Antoine Kombouare’s line up and the experience of the Parisien lifestyle would certainly appeal.
Beckham himself has recently announced that he does not see himself joining another English club, but wherever David Beckham is playing in 2012, fans of the EPL will likely keep a close eye on the midfielder’s progress.
