Ante Post Betting

Ante post betting refers to predicting the outcome of an event in advance of it happening and is a long term betting strategy.

The origins of ante post betting comes from horse racing where predictions are made in advance of the runners ‘going to post’, but ante post betting is becoming increasingly popular across a variety of sports and football betting is one such market. Betting on the winner of the FIFA World Cup is by far the biggest and most popular type of ante post bet in football.

Types of Ante Post Betting

Ante post betting in football can concern a number of outcomes in both leagues and competitions some of which are:

  • To Win Outright
Betting on the winning team of a competition or league such as the English Premier League or the UEFA Champions League
  • Top Goalscorer
The leading goalscorer of a particular league or competition such as the Golden Boot winner in the Premier League
  • Group Betting
Betting on the winner of a qualification group or betting on who will qualify from the group
  • Promotion
Betting on a side winning promotion to the league above, whether as champions, finishing in the automatic promotion places or through play offs
  • Relegation
Betting on a team to be relegated from their current division and to be playing in the league below during the next competitive season
  • Top Finish
Betting on a team to finish in the top places of a league, e.g. a top four finish in the English Premier League
  • Next Manager
The next permanent manager of a particular club

The appeal of ante post betting rests within the odds offered by bookmakers. With more uncertainty and risk, odds are generally higher the further away an event is. Variables such as manager changes, transfers, injuries and players committing to a club can all impact and influence the ante post betting odds.

Ante post betting also keeps a level and vested interest throughout the course of a competition, league and season for many punters.
