Premier League Top Goalscorer Predictions – 2012/2013

Last season Robin Van Persie claimed the Premier League Golden Boot scoring 30 goals for Arsenal in a sensational season that helped the north London side into the Champions League. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals in a 38 game Premier League season and the Dutch forward has got off to a flying start at new club Manchester United, scoring four goals in three games.

Sportingly Better analyses Van Persie‘s chances of retaining the Golden Boot and his main rivals for the award this season.

Robin Van Persie

Four goals in three games has left last season’s top scorer Robin Van Persie as the clear favourite for the Premier League Golden Boot. Last weekend’s hat-trick highlighted the goal threat the Dutch forward possesses, although Van Persie by his own admission lost his way when taking a penalty that could have added further to his goal tally.

With Wayne Rooney out injured Van Persie will continue to start for Manchester United, although Sir Alex Ferguson may choose to wisely rotate the 29 year old striker later in the season. With the service from midfield and the dominance at Old Trafford, Van Persie will again be one of the front-runners for the Golden Boot this season.

Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres is one player who looks set for an improved season. Torres scored 24 goals in 33 appearances in his first season in England, but a £50 million move to Chelsea has so far failed to bring a significant goals return. The Spanish striker has looked much sharper, scoring twice in three games and the departure of Didier Drogba has left Torres as the Blues’ number one striker this season.

Wayne Rooney

Rooney was instrumental for Manchester United in the Premier League last season scoring a career best 27 goals. The England striker has hit double digits in each of his last eight seasons in the Premier League, but the arrival of Robin Van Persie may see Rooney drop into a slightly deeper role at Old Trafford, which will lessen his chances of the Golden Boot this season. Rooney has picked up an early injury this season, which will leave the England striker sidelined for about a month.

Sergio Aguero

Sergio Aguero clearly has an eye for goal. The 24 year old scored 23 goals in his debut season in the Premier League as the Argentine international helped Manchester City to their first Premier League title. His time at Atletico Madrid was equally impressive. At just 19 years of age Aguero finished as third top scorer in La Liga with 19 goals. Despite the presence of Balotelli, Tevez and Dzeko, Aguero is considered a first team regular under Roberto Mancini and rarely finds himself rotated or rested by the Italian.

The history of the Golden Boot suggests the winner will more than likey come from one of the Champions League participants and with Torres unrivalled, the Spaniard may run Robin Van Persie close for this season’s award.

Best Bet: Robin Van Persie @3.75
