Fantasy Football Watchlist – Simon Mignolet
Liverpool continued their early summer spending spree with the £9m capture of Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet last week.
Sportingly Better takes a look at the goalkeeper’s switch to Liverpool and his potential fantasy football value next season.
Simon Mignolet
After breaking into the Sint-Truiden first team at 18 years of age, Simon Mignolet went on to lift the Belgian Second Division title just two years later.
The burgeoning talent picked up the Belgian Goalkeeper of the Year award at the end of his first campaign in the Belgian top flight, with European scouts quick to spot the young goalkeeper’s potential.
The promising stopper soon secured a switch away from his native homeland, but after turning down PSV, FC Twente and Udinese, it was Sunderland who secured the goalkeeper’s signature.
Mignolet quickly displaced Craig Gordon as the Black Cats number one goalkeeper in his first season at the Stadium of Light, with the Belgium international going on to make 90 appearances for the club.
Mignolet was one of only four goalkeepers to have played in every single match in the Premier League last season, keeping 11 clean sheets along the way.
“I am delighted that we (Liverpool) have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League. Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent.”

With transfer news continuing to link Pepe Reina with a return to Barcelona, Mignolet could be a viable rotation pairing given that Liverpool managed 16 clean sheets in the Premier League last season.
A fantasy price of around £5.0m-£5.5m will likely be the cost of Mignolet, but a transfer influx of the Belgium international will remain on hold until the future of Pepe Reina has been clarified.
