Visitors Manchester United will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions, but Louis van Gaal’s side will know that a win is the aim if the Red Devils are to play their way into the last 16 of the Champions League.
The English side will have to do without both Wayne Rooney and Morgan Schneiderlin who have both recently been ruled out for the club, so Anthony Martial is likely to get another spot up front for the side.
Goals and a lack of entertainment remain the overriding problem at Old Trafford with Manchester United having been involved in five goalless draws in their last nine games in all competitions. A total of five Champions League goals suggests this tie may well be decided by the odd-goal on Tuesday night.
Hosts Wolfsburg have long since been cut adrift from both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and after defeat in the DFB Cup already this season, Wolfsburg’s game against Manchester United is effectively where their season is at.
The Wolves do boast a glut of talented midfielders with Julian Draxler, Max Kruse, Andre Schurrle and Luiz Gustavo; all well known faces but Dieter Hecking’s mentality of whether to play for the win could hinge on the outcome and result of this match.
Given United’s injuries, a win away at the Wolfsburg Arena may effectively reignite Louis Van Gaal’s reign, but a defeat or failure to qualify from a group containing CSKA Moscow and PSV may leave plenty of question marks over the Dutch tactician.
