New Years Day Premier League Predictions

The first games of the New Year bring hope and optimism to many football fans and the first fixtures of 2011 includes some key battles for sides in the lower half of the table particularly the relegation 6 pointer between West Ham and Wolves.

After the late controversy at St Andrews, Manchester United will look to get back to winning ways and must surely start to turn some of their away draws into victories. 62% of Manchester United’s away games this season have gone over the 2.5 goals mark with incredibly three 2-2 draws to date. Ironically the reverse meeting earlier in the season also finished 2-2 with New Years Day opponents West Brom coming from 2 goals down. Goals again look likely with 7 out of the last 8 meetings going over the 2.5 goals mark. 5 out of  West Brom’s last 6 Premier League games have all seen 3 or more goals and with Brunt and Odemwingie and Berbatov, Rooney and Nani all back to fitness the odds seem especially welcoming for this early kick off.

At the Britannia Stadium Stoke welcome Everton in a game that on paper looks like a distinct contrast. Both sides struggle with goals with Everton seemingly increasingly dependent on Aussie midfielder Tim Cahill and Stoke on left winger Matthew Etherington. A premium striker should be on the shopping list come January or the Summer for both clubs, but for now both sides seem content to keep it tight. Home matches for Stoke have 60% for under the goals mark whilst 70% of Everton’s away matches have also come under 2.5 goals. Analysing the form and head to head record doesn’t make the reading any better. All 4 of Stoke’s last games and 3 out of Everton’s last 4 games have all had less than 3 goals. Historically the last 3 meetings in the Premier League have also been goal shy and this encounter will in all likelihood fall the same way.
