Three-time World Cup winners Germany remain the overwhelming favourites to take charge of Group G, but a vulnerability at the back makes Joachim Low’s side far from impenetrable.

Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo‘s hat-trick against Sweden in the play-offs secured Portugal their passage to the 2014 World Cup finals and the newly crowned Champions League winner will be eager to carry his form into Brazil.
Portugal’s failure to dismantle sides who shut up shop during qualification is a bit concerning, but Monaco’s Joao Moutinho will provide plenty of chances for Paulo Bento’s forward line after creating 10 goals during qualifying.
The Selecao will have to endure plenty of travel time in Group G, but the European side will be well supported in South America.
Portugal have progressed to the knockout stages in each of the last two World Cups and Paulo Bento’s side should be able to replicate that feat despite the hazards in the group.
Ghana
2010 World Cup quarter finalists Ghana will be hoping to spring a surprise in Group G, after being drawn with Germany, Portugal and USA.
Michael Essien has come back in from a long hiatus away from the Black Stars, whilst the return of Kevin Prince-Boateng, Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew provided the necessary impetus Ghana needed to thrash Egypt 7-3 over two legs in the play-offs.
Kwesi Appiah’s side scored more goals than any other African side during qualifying and although qualification out of Group G may be beyond them, the Black Stars look set to give a good account of themselves in Brazil.
USA
USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann has stated that not reaching the knockout stages will be classed as a failure, as the North American side target an unlikely last 16 place.
The omission of star striker Landon Donovan has caused some controversy, but the USA are the most improved nation at the World Cup after picking up 16 wins in 2013 and climbing from 27th to 14th place in the FIFA World Rankings.
The cover provided by Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones will be key given America’s shortcomings at the back, but the North American side will have to endure more travel and the second highest average temperatures at the World Cup, leaving Klinsmann with plenty more chances to meddle with his squad.
