Spanish Football Focus & Tips For The Weekend

Another predictable 1-2 finish with Barcelona and Real Madrid is on the cards in 2011 as the rest of the pack chase Champions League and Europa League football and battle relegation.

A bet that owes me nothing is Villareal to be leading at the break and again I will be looking into their phenomenal half time record at El Madrigal come Sunday. Astonishingly Villareal have been ahead at HT in 7 out of 8 games played at El Madrigal. Curiously Barcelona can mirror this record away from Camp Nou, although the odds you generally receive at half time on such favourites often does not contain much value at all. Villarreal’s opponents are Almeria who sit just outside the bottom three. Almeria have been hit for 8 at home by Barcelona in late November and have been losing at half time in 3 out of their last 5 away games and I expect El Submarino Amarillo to have their noses in front at half time.

Elsewhere at Camp Nou free scoring Barcelona welcome struggling Levante and we could be in for a cricket score once more. Barcelona have scored 29 goals in their last 6 games, including the 8 mentioned against Almeria and should definitely hit the back of the net with some frequency. Real Madrid put 8 passed them last time out in the Copa Del Rey and I don’t expect it to be much better for them against Barcelona. The main protagonists are the imperious Lionel Messi and David Villa, but those who have watched the Catalans recently might also have noticed the contribution of Pedro. The Spaniard has scored 4 goals in the last 4 Primera Division games for Barcelona and has opened the scoring in 2 of these. Odds of 5.5 aren’t bad to open the scoring but the safe play is on the anytime scorer.
