Premiership Predictions – 17-19 August

David Moyes takes charge of champions Manchester United for the first time on Saturday, with title rivals Chelsea hosting newly promoted Hull City Tigers on Sunday.

Sportingly Better picks out the best value Premiership predictions and football betting tips on the opening weekend of the season, as Crystal Palace host Tottenham.

Premiership Predictions

Crystal Palace (4.75) v Tottenham (1.83); Draw (3.75)

Newly promoted Crystal Palace host Champions League hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with the visitors eager to get their campaign off to a flying start.

PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale will sit out Tottenham’s opening match this weekend, but elsewhere Spurs have markedly improved their squad.

Spain international Roberto Soldado fired in 24 goals for Valencia in La Liga last season and the £26 million arrival has already targeted hitting 20 goals in his debut campaign in the Premier League.

Confederations Cup winner Paulinho should also start, whilst Belgian winger Nacer Chadli could slot in on the left hand side in the absence of Bale.

Tottenham have scored at least two goals in their last six away games in the Premier League. Back Tottenham to score over 1.5 goals at 1.80.

Tottenham finished last season with an eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and Andre Villas-Boas’ promising side should have few concerns against their newly promoted opponents at Selhurst Park.

Hosts Crystal Palace came through the play-offs to earn their place in the English top flight last time out, but Ian Holloway’s side look significantly weaker after seeing winger Wilfried Zaha returned to Manchester United and last season’s top scorer in the Championship; Glenn Murray ruled out through injury.

Spanish youngster Jose Campana offers some promise in midfield, but the signings of Marouane Chamakh and Dwight Gayle hardly inspire confidence for the Eagles.

No side conceded more goals than Crystal Palace in the top 10 of the Championship last season and the fact that Ian Holloway has chosen little to address Crystal Palace’s backline, suggests another cavalier approach in the Premier League is to come.

Tottenham to win @1.83

Swansea (4.00) v Manchester United (2.05); Draw (3.50)

David Moyes kicks-off his tenure at Manchester United with a trip to the Liberty Stadium on Saturday evening, but little confidence surrounds the champions following their managerial change over the summer.

The Red Devils are undefeated in 24 of their last 26 games in the Premiership, but a number of poor showings during pre-season has seen Manchester United drift out to 2.05 on the betting market in this match.

Golden Boot winner Robin Van Persie will again lead the line after firing in two goals during Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Wigan in the Community Shield last weekend, with wantaway striker Wayne Rooney sitting another game out.

Shinji Kagawa will again be Van Persie’s main foil on Saturday, with Wilfried Zaha pushing for a start after impressing during pre-season.

Hosts Swansea looked impressive during their 4-0 Europa League qualifying match against Malmo a fortnight ago, with Michael Laudrup having strengthened both the size and quality of his squad.

Summer signing Wilfried Bony will look to ease the burden on 18-goal Michu this season, but the former Vitesse striker may start from the bench on Saturday, after featuring for Ivory Coast during the international week.

Swansea finished last season by failing to win nine of their last 10 matches in the Premier League, but Laudrup’s fresh impetus of players over the summer, should aid the Swans woeful end of season form.

Midfielders Jonjo Shelvey, Abel Hernandez and Jonathan de Guzman are all rated doubtful for Saturday’s match with the champions, but the hosts will be quietly confident of springing a surprise, despite the form of Manchester United’s talisman; Robin Van Persie.

Swansea only recorded the 13th best home record in the division last season and the Premier League champions will be hopeful of kicking off their campaign with a win against Michael Laudrup’s side this weekend.
