Premiership Betting Tips 20th & 21st August

Alex McLeish’s success last season was largely based on Birmingham’s form at St Andrews and McLeish will be quick to set up another robust and compact outlook at Villa Park. Summer signing Shay Given impressed between the sticks and should be fit enough to continue in goal.

Blackburn are Aston Villa’s opponents this weekend and Steve Kean’s side look up against it this season. Further player sales are expected in order to cull the club’s salary bill and the transfers secured so far have done little to catch the imagination or increase optimism for Rovers fans. Givet and Emerton are definitely ruled out and there are further doubts concerning defensive duo Samba and Nelsen.

Alex McLeish has the luxury of picking from a virtually fully fit squad and there seems little to suggest that Blackburn will come away with anything from this match.

Aston Villa to win @1.72

Tottenham’s delay to the Premier League season does not seem to have hindered their start to the campaign, with a 5-0 away win over Hearts on Thursday night recorded in the Europa League.

Next up for Spurs is Manchester United, who have a number of concerns at the back with Vidic, Ferdinand and Rafael all hauled off in the opening round match against the Baggies. Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea looks far from assured and the absence of experienced centre back pairing of Vidic and Ferdinand will be a blow for the Red Devils.

United have played well going forward with Wayne Rooney impressing and Ashley Young looking instantly at home in Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. With Spurs hitting five on Thursday, goals look increasingly likely for Monday night’s game at Old Trafford.

Both teams to score (Manchester United v Tottenham) @1.72
