Expectations are high at Anfield this season. Kenny Dalglish has added a number of proven Premier League players especially in midfield with the likes of Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson, who should all provide extra quality on the ball. Champions Manchester United begin their title defence with a tricky trip away to West Brom at the Hawthorns.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were impressive in the Community Shield on Sunday and Ferguson will have a few choices to make over his starting eleven on Sunday. Javier Hernandez is definitely out and there are injury doubts over Evra, Valencia, Carrick and Fletcher. Manchester United’s backline was questionable in the first half of that game and it may take young goalkeeper David De Gea a while to assert himself as United’s number 1 keeper.
Goals dominated West Brom under Roy Hodgson last term and striker Peter Odemwingie proved to be a revelation for the Baggies. The Nigerian striker is a slight doubt, but should be fit enough for Sunday’s clash. The signing of Shane Long may prove inspirational for Hodgson, coupled with the loan capture of goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Eight of the last ten matches in the Premier League between these two sides have finished with 3 or more goals and opening games are usually bold and attacking affairs.
