Premiership Betting Tips – 1-2 January

QPR slumped back to the foot of the table following a woeful display against Liverpool on Sunday.

Champions Manchester City won a seven goal thriller at Carrow Road to maintain the pressure on leaders Manchester United who picked up a routine win against West Brom.

Elsewhere Aston Villa’s rotten run of form continued as the Villains slipped to a 3-0 defeat at home to Wigan, Reading secured a crucial victory over West Ham and Arsenal dispatched Newcastle 7-3 at the Emirates Stadium.

This week our Premier League predictions come from the south coast as Theo Walcott returns to face his former club.

Premier League Predictions

Southampton (4.50) v Arsenal (1.80); Draw (3.60)

Theo Walcott’s hat-trick saw Arsenal move up to fifth in the league following a thrilling 7-3 victory over Newcastle.

The England international has been proving his worth in recent weeks after finally being deployed through the middle by Arsene Wenger, but the former Southampton midfielder has yet to sign a new contract for the Gunners.

Arsenal go into Tuesday’s match in good form after winning their last four games in the Premier League. The midfield trident of Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla will again be key for Arsenal who could welcome back Per Mertesacker.

Hosts Southampton have brought themselves closer to the pack over the last two months following victories over QPR, Reading and Newcastle as well as credible points at Fulham and Stoke.

Southampton have not beaten a side in the top half of the table this season and if Nigel Adkin’s side are to avoid the drop it will be by taking points away from their relegation rivals.

Captain Adam Lallana is unlikely to return, but Ricky Lambert has at least found the net in each of the Saints’ last two games in the Premier League.

Arsenal were 6-1 victors in the reverse fixture earlier in the season and after hitting seven against Newcastle last time out, Arsene Wenger’s side should have too much firepower for their south coast opponents.
