Premier League Top Goalscorer Predictions 2011/2012

Last season Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez  topped the goalscorer charts with 20 Premier League goals a piece and this season looks another deciding close contest for some of the world’s leading strikers in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.

Tevez and Berbatov look unlikely to repeat their feat this season. Carlos Tevez’s off field problems have been widely reported with the Argentine keen on a switch away from Manchester, whilst the Bulgarian looks increasing likely to take a back seat this season following the emergence of Mexican Hernandez last term.

Hernandez had a big impact at Old Trafford last season and rightly deserved the plaudits and is currently the favourite for the Premier League Golden Boot. Whether the Mexican will start or feature in enough games remains to be seen, with Sir Alex Ferguson favouring squad rotation due to the demands of the Champions League and domestic cups. Berbatov played 32 games last season (8 as a substitute) and only reached 20 goals through several goal hauls, something Hernandez looks unlikely to repeat.

Chelsea’s Spanish forward Fernando Torres is joint second favourite, but this is more as a result of his international standing and reputation at Liverpool than his past 2 seasons in English football. Roman Abramovich will not tolerate his £50m investment not returning and manager Andre Vilas Boas will surely get more goals out of ‘El Nino’ than the Spanish forward has managed in his last two terms.

Darren Bent is a proven Premier League scorer. The Aston Villa striker picked up 17 goals last term and 24 during the 2009/2010 campaign and the England international is a proven penalty taker at this level also. With both Downing and Young departed, Bent will need to increase his goal tally even further this season, although whether this happens under Alex McLeish remains to be seen.

Uruguayan Luis Suarez was crowned the most valuable player at this summer’s Copa America and was unlucky not to finish as leading goalscorer. Even back in his Ajax days, Suarez showed his goalscoring touch with campaigns of 20, 24 and 35 goals from 2007-2010. If Liverpool emerge as force this season then Luis Suarez will play a leading role in Kenny Dalglish’s new look side.

Dutchman Robin Van Persie should come close this season, providing the Arsenal forward stays fit and injury free. Van Persie was 2 goals short of Berbatov and Tevez’s total last term and had the Dutchman played more than his 25 games would have surely topped the goalscoring charts.
