Premier League Football Predictions – Title Contenders

With the transfer window coming to an end, it’s time to assess where teams will finish and who might win the league come May 22nd. The top of the table reads as follows:

  1. Man Utd  51pts
  2. Arsenal  46pts
  3. Man City  45 pts
  4. Chelsea  41pts
  5. Tottenham  38pts

Tottenham

Despite Tottenham having had a brilliant season so far, I have chosen to overlook them because at odds of 100.0 at some places, the bookies clearly think that it will take an amazing effort from the team to claw back 13 pts from Man Utd before the end of the season.

Man Utd

Assessing the next 5 games, Man Utd face Man City at home and Chelsea away. I expect these to be two very tight games where the slightest mistake or bit of genius will win the match. Therefore it’s a possibility that Man Utd could drop points on either occasion. At low odds of 1.74 and with 14 games to go there is not much value in this bet.

Man City

Despite having to play Man Utd at Old Trafford, Man City have some favourable fixtures – Birmingham (a), West Brom (h), Fulham (h), Wigan (h).  All are games where Mancini will look to take 3 pts, therefore at odds at up to 19.0 to win the league at betting exchanges, it is worth a bet with the opportunity to trade out after these games where the odds are likely to be lower than 19.0.

Chelsea

Chelsea are 10pts off the lead and have some serious catching up to do, which can help to explain why Chelsea feel the need to bring in a big name like Torres. If they do manage to sign him it could change their season but at the moment it is still unknown to whether the transfer will go ahead. They have some tricky fixtures ahead with three away games at Sunderland, Fulham and Blackpool and two home games against Liverpool and Man Utd. Being 10pts off the lead, Chelsea need to win all five of these games to stay in the title race. At odds of 9.0 and needing to make up 10 pts, it is a bit of a long shot but could be worth it if Torres signs.

Arsenal

Arsenal are clearly a team in form with Van Persie, Fabregas and Walcott back fit and hungry to play. Adding the likes of Nasri and Arshavin you can see why Arsenal have a strong attacking lineup that have contributed to scoring 3 goals in 4 of their last 6 games. Despite Arsenal’s defence being called into question constantly season to season, they have managed to keep 4 clean sheets in their last 4 matches.

Considering this, Arsenal can expect to gain more points with their next 5 favourable fixtures including 4 at home – Everton (h), Newcastle (a), Wolves (h), Stoke (h), Sunderland (h). Wenger will expect wins for all of these matches and given their current form they will be clear favourites for each match. With Arsenal 3pts behind and with odds of 3.9 at some betting exchanges, Arsenal are worth backing with the option of trading out after these next 5 fixtures when the odds are likely to be lower.
