Robin Van Persie
As exclusively predicted 12 months ago, Robin Van Persie’s switch to Manchester United proved influential, as the Netherlands international scooped the Golden Boot award for the second year in a row.
News of Wayne Rooney’s injury set back should see Van Persie start the campaign as the focal point in David Moyes’ attack, with the clinical striker eager to impress his new manager.
Van Persie has scored a combined total of 56 goals in the Premier League over the last two years and the former Arsenal striker has been rightly installed as the clear favourite in this season’s top goalscorer market.
With the likes of Nani, Anderson and Ashley Young very much on the periphery and a lack of investment at the club, United’s midfield could be the main obstacle in Robin Van Persie scooping the treble this time round.
Sergio Aguero
Despite only scoring 12 goals last year, Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero remains an interesting proposition and will likely find favour under new manager Manuel Pellegrini.
Aguero scored 23 goals in his first season in England and although the Argentinean’s tally was not enough to claim the Golden Boot, Aguero did help the Citizens win the Premiership title from rivals Manchester United.
With Carlos Tevez having already departed to Italy, Aguero’s game time in the Premier League should increase and should the Argentina international steer clear of the minor injuries that hampered his form last season, then the former Atletico Madrid striker could net a considerable amount of goals in Pellegrini’s new-look attacking side.
Gareth Bale
After scoring an impressive 21 goals last year, PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale will be well backed in the betting market, with the player expected to remain at White Hart Lane for another season.
Bale was deployed in an increasingly attacking role last term and with Emmanuel Adebayor expected to move on, Bale could once again find some playing time in a more central attacking position.
A striking arrival however, is almost certain and Bale may be forced back into a wide attacking left position as Andre Villas-Boas switches back to his preferred 4-3-3 formation.
Wayne Rooney
Twelve goals last season made Wayne Rooney only the 13th best striker in the league (according to goals) and despite rumours of unrest, Rooney looks set to stay at Old Trafford this year.
A pre-season injury during Manchester United’s tour of Asia has sidelined Rooney for at least a month and despite a tough start for the champions, the England international is unlikely to be rushed back into first team affairs.
Manchester United’s players have commented on Rooney being in the best shape for at least five years and with a World Cup year on the horizon, the Manchester United forward could be a strong each-way bet of finishing in the top four places this season.
Christian Benteke
Nineteen goals in his debut season in the Premier League may have took many by surprise, but the Belgium international will be keen to boost his reputation in the Premier League after submitting a transfer request to leave current club Aston Villa.
Tottenham remain the favourites for the Belgian striker’s signature and a move to north London could see the Belgian striker going on to at least match last season’s tally, given the increased chances that the former Genk forward would receive.
Playing time will be key in any move for Benteke and the ambitious striker will be keen to show his worth on a more illustrious stage this season.
Romelu Lukaku
After impressing on loan at West Bromwich Albion last season, Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku could be one to watch out for this season, as the forward returns to Chelsea.
Lukaku scored 17 goals for the Baggies last term and despite rumours of numerous summer arrivals at the Bridge, Lukaku could find himself central to Jose Mourinho’s plans should the Blues fail to land any of their top targets.
Both Demba Ba and Fernando Torres are thought to be unfavoured by Mourinho, so look to back Lukaku at 30/1 after the transfer window shuts on the 3rd September should Chelsea fail to sign a top-class recognised striker.
