Louis van Gaal

Currently the bookmakers favourite, Holland coach Louis van Gaal started yesterday’s trading as a 7/1 joint favourite alongside Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp.

Reports in the Dutch media on Monday claimed that the van Gaal had met with three members of the Glazer family on Friday night and a deal had been informally finalised, with player-coach Ryan Giggs taking over as interim boss until the end of the season.

The board have moved fast to fend off the long-standing interest from Tottenham in the manager, with interest in the manager set to soar by the end of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The appointment of van Gaal would work in Manchester United’s favour in persuading Robin van Persie to stay at the club, with a number of players including Danny Welbeck the latest to want out at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal has been open about his desire to manage in the Premier League and the Glazer’s will be keen to make a significant appointment after being impressed by the coach recently.

Jurgen Klopp

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp is another that is well thought of on the continent, after earning plaudits for the German sides performances in the UEFA Champions League over the last two campaigns.

Klopp’s attacking, pressing and high tempo style carries similarities to that of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as former managerial target Pep Guardiola, but a move away from the Westfalenstadion is one that contains greater uncertainty.

The lure of the Champions League stage will again be highly sought-after by Klopp, something that Manchester United would be unable to provide for the talented German coach.

Ryan Giggs

The veteran midfielder has been operating in a technical role as player/coach at Old Trafford this season under David Moyes, but the former Wales international is only likely to get the job on an interim basis.

Giggs would have the support of the dressing room (something that Moyes had reportedly lost) after being a mainstay at the club during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, but the board have expressed a desire to move away from that period in the clubs history, with van Gaal and Klopp leading the chase.

Giggs’ performance for the last few games of the season is likely to be academic, with the club unlikely to gamble on an inexperienced manager in what is such a crucial appointment for the side.

Verdict

As exclusively revealed last night on Twitter, the move for Louis van Gaal is currently in the process; with the club acting quickly in order to fend interest from Tottenham and other interested parties.

A deal for the current Netherlands manager is likely to be wrapped up before the World Cup begins, with current player/coach Ryan Giggs leading the side for the final few games of what has been a disappointing campaign for the reigning Premier League champions.
