Tuesday night’s rumours of Sir Alex Ferguson’s impending retirement were finally confirmed this morning and after 26 years at the helm, Manchester United will be looking for a new manager.
The clear favourite to take over from Sir Alex Ferguson is Everton manager David Moyes, who is finally set to get his first chance at managing a top side.
The Everton Shareholders Association have confirmed they are trying to enforce an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) imminently, with the Scottish manager having been sounded out by the Glazers over the weekend to replace the most successful manager in British football.
Moyes’ contract officially runs out at the end of the season and the Everton manager’s experience of Premiership football and long term stability appear to be key reasons why the board at Manchester United have approached the Merseyside club, instead of seeking out Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho.
The ‘Special One’ is well respected by Ferguson, but Mourinho’s heart appears to be set on a return to Stamford Bridge in the summer, with both the manager and current Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez eluding to that fact in recent weeks.
An announcement regarding Moyes is expected to be made before Sunday’s game, with the current Everton manager being given the best chance and time to prepare his new side in time of the start of the season.
