Just nine months after helping the Foxes lift the Premier League title, former fan favourite Claudio Ranieri was sacked by Leicester and despite the absence of an obvious successor in the managerial market, the club felt like they had to act quickly in order to preserve the champions top-flight status.

Sportingly Better takes a look at the frontrunners in the next permanent manager market, with what has quickly become a two-horse race.

Roy Hodgson

The current favourite at 1.50 with a number of betting sites in the UK, Roy Hodgson is the experienced and seasoned choice having led a number of Premier League outfits to success.

Nine years ago Hodgson kept Fulham in the Premier League nine years ago and just two years later the coach guided the Cottagers to the final of the Europa League just two years later.

A difficult time at Liverpool soon followed before the experienced boss took the reigns of the national England football team.

A lacklustre showing culminating in a devastating performance against Iceland in last summer’s European Championships may have tarnished his reputation, but the elder statesman did do a good job at the Hawthorns for West Brom prior to the Three Lions appointment.

Hodgson’s experience and steady hand are both key traits that Leicester will be looking for in order for the club to avoid the drop this season, particularly given the lack of leadership their current caretaker boss has in the hot seat.

Craig Shakespeare

Current caretaker boss Craig Shakespeare did his claims of landing the Leicester manager’s job no harm at all with a superb victory over Liverpool on Monday night in his first match in charge.

Foxes full-back Danny Simpson came out and declared that Shakespeare is a “top coach and a top guy”, but Shakespeare himself has said he will not know if he will get the job on a permanent basis until the middle of next week, but in truth the Leicester board will have already made the decision by 5pm this Saturday.

The Foxes face Hull in a hugely significant clash at the bottom of the table on Saturday and should Shakespeare fail to pick up three points in that game the odds of a Roy Hodgson appointment would dramatically fall even shorter.

Leicester vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha is keen to give his highly thought of number two an opportunity, perhaps at least until the end of the season, but that decision would represent an element of risk with the coach having no top-flight experience as a manager in the Premier League.

Verdict

Saturday’s match against Hull could well be a defining moment for the top two in the Premier League betting market, but given Hodgson’s credentials and his current price, any slip up by Shakespeare would surely hand the job to the 69-year old former England manager.
