Fantasy Football Tips – Gameweek 1

Chelsea and Reading  kick off the fantasy football season with a double gameweek, whilst champions Manchester City welcome Southampton to the Etihad Stadium with fantasy managers hoping for a fast start to their seasons.

Captain Choices

Fernando Torres (CHE)

With Didier Drogba departing to China, Chelsea’s Fernando Torres looks set to be the number one striker this season at Stamford Bridge. The much-maligned striker showed glimpses of returning to some kind of form during the latter stages of last season in both the Champions League and Premier League and found the net last weekend in Chelsea’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Torres has only once managed to score less than 125 points in the Premier League, so the £10.0m price tag on the Spanish striker will be tempting for fantasy managers, especially considering Chelsea’s double gameweek, where the Blues will face Wigan at the DW Stadium, before hosting newly promoted Reading at Stamford Bridge in the week.

Sergio Aguero (MCI)

Those without Torres may wish to opt for Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero for the Gameweek 1 captain’s armband. Aguero was devastating in his first season in England scoring 23 goals, helping Roberto Mancini’s side to win the Premier League crown on goal difference. Sixteen of Aguero’s 23 goals came at the Etihad Stadium and unlike Manchester City’s other attacking options, Aguero should feature more regularly than any other striker for Roberto Mancini.

Manchester City’s opening fixture this gameweek is a home tie against newly promoted Southampton, which is projected to return notable fantasy points for the former Atletico Madrid striker.

Transfer Tips

Mladen Petric (FUL) – £6.0m

Fulham’s summer signing has been scoring freely in pre-season with the former Hamburg striker again linking up with Martin Jol. Petric scored 38 goals in 98 appearances in four years at the club and the Croatian striker could reach double figures for the Cottagers this season.

Petric’s Premier League debut will come at Craven Cottage this weekend against a Norwich side who conceded 66 goals last season and the former Hamburg forward is an attractive option for fantasy managers who are looking for a budget striking option.

Mark Noble (WHM) – £5.0m

Newly promoted West Ham begin their Premier League campaign at home to Aston Villa this weekend. Noble was a key part of West Ham’s promotion push last term and scored 18 goals from midfield including eight assists.

Noble will be involved in his fair share of set-pieces for the Hammers and is usually favoured for West Ham’s spot-kicks. The £5.0m price tag on Noble’s head represents good value, with West Ham’s fixtures favourable early on.

Santi Cazorla (ARS) – £9.0m

Arsenal’s summer signing has scored five goals or more in each of his last six seasons in La Liga. Last year for Malaga, Santi Cazorla returned a career best nine goals and Arsené Wenger will be hoping that Cazorla, along with Walcott, Podolski and Giroud can help fill the void of some of the goals that the departing Robin Van Persie scored for the Gunners.

Cazorla looks set to make his debut at home to Sunderland in Gameweek 1 and has the pace, intelligence, creativity and goal threat to be a hit for the Gunners this season.
