Fantasy Football Player Picks 2011/2012 – Goalkeepers
Shay Given (AVL) 5.0m
With Brad Friedel moving onto Tottenham, Aston Villa and Alex McLeish moved quickly to secure the signature of one of the Premier League’s best shot stoppers and goalkeepers over the last 10 years. Given did not figure once in the league for Roberto Mancini last season, but the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper looks certain to play all 38 games this campaign. Given also has the benefit of playing alongside international team mate and former club colleague Richard Dunne. Aston Villa picked up 7 clean sheets last year and with Alex McLeish likely to employ a defensive approach, Given may well surpass that mark this season.
Ben Foster (WBA) 5.0m
Last season for Birmingham City, Foster made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League and kept 9 clean sheets in the process. Foster is another player with increasing Premiership pedigree, and bar injury should feature in all 38 of the Baggies games this season. Manager Roy Hodgson is prided for his organisation and with a full pre-season behind him Hodgson should have readied his troops to become a more solid outfit this term.
Joe Hart (MCI) 7.0m
No fewer than 18 clean sheets were made by Joe Hart and Manchester City last term and England’s number 1 goalkeeper is quite rightly priced at the premium of 7.0m. Manager Roberto Mancini is a very tactical manager and last season often sought to preserve leads when the Citizens were in front. With Kompany looking increasingly accomplished at the heart of City’s defence and the likes of Barry, De Jong and Yaya Toure providing protection in front of the back line, Hart looks again likely to finish top of the goalkeepers.
Tim Howard (EVE) 5.5m
Tim Howard is another who continues to gain experience in the Premier League between the sticks, but whether David Moyes can keep hold of Phil Jagielka may ultimately prove the American’s worth this season. Tim Howard picked up 9 clean sheets last season and with Coleman and Rodwell a season wiser and Baines and Jagielka at the back, Howard should again repeat the feat shown last season in goal.
