Fantasy Football Player Picks 2011/2012 – Defenders

Vincent Kompany (MCI) 6.0m

Kompany was ever present for Roberto Mancini and Manchester City last term, missing just one game all season. The Belgium centre back picked up 18 clean sheets, 5 more than Nemanja Vidic and appears perhaps the only Manchester City defender to be a guaranteed starter. At 6.0m Kompany will be a popular choice amongst fantasy managers and the change in the bonus points system will likely see Kompany benefit even further this season.

John O’Shea (SUN) 5.0m

The Irish defender was largely used as a squad rotation player last season by Sir Alex Ferguson and featured 18 times, but the Sunderland captain can be assured of increased game time at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats picked up 13 clean sheets last season, but a major influx of players this term may slow down a similar clean sheet haul. Manager Steve Bruce may quite rightly prioritise the back line more this season after the departure of Darren Bent in January and with O’Shea priced at 5.0m, the Irishman will be a popular choice amongst fantasy managers.

Rafael (MUN) 5.5m

The young Brazilian full back does have a tendency to be a bit hot headed in games, but this should not stop fantasy managers picking up a regular Manchester United defender for 5.5m. With Gary Neville now retired and John O’Shea sold to Sunderland, Rafael is the only natural right back in the Manchester United squad and should look to cement down the right back position for years to come. Despite Sir Alex Ferguson splashing the cash on a number of new arrivals this summer, Rafael seems one of a number of youngsters at Old Trafford to be given the opportunity to shine this term.

Robert Huth (STO) 6.0m

Goalscoring defenders do not come any better than Robert Huth of Stoke. The German defender could not be bettered and picked up 6 goals last season, aided by dead ball specialists Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant as well as arrowed throw in missiles by Rory Delap. Huth is well established as part of Tony Pulis’ physical outfit at the Britannia alongside Ryan Shawcross and should prove a good investment for fantasy managers over the course of the season.

Phil Jagielka (EVE) 5.5m

There has been increasing speculation surrounding the future of Everton’s Phil Jagielka this season, with the England central defender being consistently linked with Arsenal. Everton’s defender looks likely to increase on his 31 games last season and is another player who may well benefit from changes to the bonus point system this season. Jagielka may not carry the same goal and assist threat of Leighton Baines, but at 5.5m is 2.5m cheaper than his teammate.
