Euro 2016 Betting – Outright Winner
The European Championship kicks off this Friday as hosts France take on Romania, so Sportingly Better analyses one of the biggest ante-post betting markets for who will end the tournament as the champions.
Euro 2016 Betting
In 2012, Spain emerged as the victors but a lot has changed since then, as they now find themselves third favourites for the title this time around. Hosts France alongside World Champions Germany are highly tipped and feature at the top of the Euro odds market.
France
With home advantage helping France on previous occasions and a strong squad, they have an opportunity to bring delight to their people. Going forward, they look particularly dangerous with a youthful mixture of pace and technique. Griezmann (32 goals) and Martial had strong domestic seasons, whilst Giroud also has a keen eye for goal.
France’s 4-3-3 formation allows them to accommodate the dynamic trio of Pogba, Kante and Matuidi who will look to dominate the centre of the park in each game. The main problem for Deschamps though is at the back. With Raphael Varane, Jeremy Mathieu, Mamadou Sakho and Kurt Zouma all unavailable, there are question marks over how they will cope and a lot will depend on their impressive attack to relieve pressure.
Germany
Since Germany’s World Cup victory in 2014, they’ve lost two international stars in Philipp Lahm and Miroslav Klose. History is also against them with only two teams ever to follow up a World Cup win with a European Championship, France in 2000 and Spain in 2012.
However, they have an impressive squad and a wealth of talent in midfield. With creators on board like Ozil and Kroos, Germany’s attackers will not be short of chances, whilst they also boast a strong defence with one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Manuel Neuer.
Spain
Another team in transition are Spain, having lost two stars of their own in the form of Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso. However, all seems to be going smoothly as La Roja are on an 11-game unbeaten run, scoring nine goals in recent encounters with Bosnia and South Korea.
Spain have an experienced squad with plenty of talent from the front to the back. After a stunning domestic season, De Gea should finally be given the gloves between the sticks to further his glowing reputation. Up front, Morata is set to take up the lone striker role after a strong campaign with Juventus. He has terrific dribbling skills and the physical strength to hold up the ball when needed. In support, he’ll have the experienced stalwarts of the game in Iniesta, Fabregas and Silva.
England
Fans of England will be forgiven for being slightly optimistic as they approach Euro 2016. The cause of such optimism lies with impressive domestic seasons for their strikers, with Harry Kane notching 25 times in the Premier League and Vardy, 24 times. Whether they can both work in the same starting eleven remains to be seen but they have the potential to be a dangerous prospect.
A lot will come down to the supply given to the forwards and this will depend upon the performances of young stars in Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling alongside the experienced Rooney. Alli has had an incredible season and if he can bring his Spurs understanding with Kane to the tournament, they could be a potent partnership.
England’s centre backs are a concern but Dier should provide cover allowing his fellow Spurs team mates, Rose and Walker to bomb forward to provide attacking support when called upon.
Belgium
Many players of Belgium’s squad are approaching their peak and this could be the European Championship where they fulfil their potential. They have young stars in the form of Kevin De Bruyne (24), Eden Hazard (25) and Romelu Lukaku (23), and they will be expected to lead the charge.
De Bruyne proved to be a revelation at City supplying plenty of goals and assists, and whilst Hazard may have had a poor season in general, he rediscovered some sparkle and form in the final games. On the other hand, Lukaku’s season ended poorly but it shouldn’t be overlooked that he still found the back of the net 18 times in the Premier League alone.
With other players like Courtois, Alderweireld and Witsel in support, Belgium have a shout in this year’s tournament.
