England Squad Betting Tips – Euro 2016

With the Premier League season drawing to a close, England manager Roy Hodgson has until 12th May to select his final squad of 23 players for the European Football Championships this summer, but who will board the plane to France?

England Squad Betting

The odds of England reaching the final of a major football competition have always been notoriously overpriced in the ante-post betting markets, but a 3-2 victory against tournament co-favourites Germany has seen the Three Lions installed as fourth favourites for the tournament.

England’s key to success this summer will be the balance in the side, the execution of the manager’s tactics during the tournament and the squad selection by England’s head coach.

Several players will be hopeful of making the 23-man squad, but those players who have shot to form recently including Manchester United teenager Marcus Rashford and West Ham striker Andy Carroll are unlikely to force their way into the England squad with a series of admissions by Hodgson stating that a player with “more reason to be called up” will have to be left out.

With less than a month to go, Sportingly Better analyses the best value hopefuls who could make the England squad this summer for Euro 2016.

Jack Wilshere

An undoubted favourite of Hodgson, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere made his first appearance of the season against Sunderland last weekend, after spending the season on the sidelines with a leg injury.

The injury to Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could mean an extra central midfield spot could be open for Wilshere and given the player’s pedigree at European and international level the odds on the player to make the England squad look enticing.

The biggest obstacle for Wilshere remains potential Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater, who has been at the heart of Leicester’s fairytale story this season and it will be difficult for Hodgson to justify leaving the player out, especially given his comments about players who are deserving of a space.

Luke Shaw

Tipped for a big year at the beginning of the season, Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture in the Champions League against PSV, which left the marauding left back out for almost the entirety of the campaign.

The Manchester United left back recently returned to training at the beginning of this month, but it was as far back as March that Hodgson declared that “all that remains is for (Shaw) to get fit enough to be selected”.

Shaw has yet to feature for Manchester United since the leg break in the Champions League back in September and the biggest obstacle for Shaw’s international shout is whether or not club coach Louis van Gaal will feature the player at all between now and the end of the season.

Tom Heaton

Tom Heaton has enjoyed a fine season for the Clarets in the Championship this term, as the club chase a return to the Premier League.

A late injury to Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland has opened up the third goalkeeping spot for the Three Lions, with Burnley stopper Heaton battling it out with West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster in a straight battle for the last remaining place.

Foster endured a long spell out with injury up until the end of January for the Baggies, but the stopper has been an ever-present for Tony Pulis’ side since then, but a change of guard looks likely to give Heaton favourtism.

Verdict

With all but a few spots up for grabs, England manager Roy Hodgson will know virtually all of his selections going into the tournament, but the odds on Heaton and Wilshere to make the England squad in particular, provide plenty of value in the ante-post betting markets.
