England v Lithuania – Betting Preview

Two late goals against Spain saw England throw away a winning position last time out, with the Three Lions continuing their unbeaten run under Gareth Southgate.

Sportingly Better takes an early look at the World Cup Qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley later this month.

International Football Tips

England (1.11) v Lithuania (15.00); Draw (10.00)

England will be looking to extend their unbeaten start in Group F against Lithuania in March, with the Three Lions sitting two points clear at the top of the qualification table.

A 0-0 draw away at Slovenia back in October has been the only blemish so far, with the home nation having yet to concede a goal during the qualifiers.

Speculation is already beginning to surface that Southgate may well look to bring in some fresh faces into the squad, with Hull centre half Harry Maguire and Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson (who was a regular for Southgate with the England Under 21s) among the players thought to be under consideration.

Changes further forward however, may be where the manager needs to focus, with the Three Lions having only scored six times in four games against fairly average international opposition.

Two goals against Spain in England’s last match will have been somewhat welcomed, but despite their first goal being from the penalty spot, competitively speaking, Gareth Southgate’s side have struggled with their clinicism in front of goal.

Wayne Rooney’s lack of importance for club and country continues to grow, whilst injuries to Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge dismantles what could otherwise be a good amount of attacking options for the nation.

The mark for goals in the game against Lithuania however doesn’t quite reflect that, with the benchmark currently being set to 3.5, whilst over 2.5 goals can be backed at a rather appealing 1.44 according to the latest international football betting odds.

Opponents Lithuania suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Slovakia back in November and that may well be the strongest pointer in terms of how the handicap and goals betting markets are currently priced here.

Outside of that result though, the visitors have recorded one win and two draws in the group, to sit just three points behind second placed Slovenia, but anything other than a comfortable home victory will be unexpected.

Verdict

England have lost just one of their past 12 international games and although the Three Lions will face rivals Germany a few days before, Gareth Southgate’s side should be professional enough to continue their defensive solidity and secure another qualification win.
