Former Basel boss Murat Yakin currently leads the betting at odds of 5.00 having led the Swiss side to consecutive titles during two years at the club.
Pochettino brought some real thunder to Southampton’s game this term and a similar approach with Yakin’s dominating play and counter-attacking style could be on offer for the Saints next season. One of the Premier League’s most attractive managerial slots is likely to be filled sooner rather than later with Rickie Lambert’s transfer to Liverpool one of the only moves sanctioned by the hoard without the new manager in place.
Basel reached the last four in the Europa League two years ago and made the last eight in the same competition this year, but it was home and away victories against Chelsea in the Champions League group stages that really brought Basel and Yakin to the attention of those in England.
Southampton are owned by the Swiss Liebherr family and a move for the recently available Swiss coach may be the “swift” appointment the club are looking to make.
After recently returning Feyenoord back to the big time in the Eredivisie, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman has crept back on the radar for managerial vacancies across Europe.
Eredivisie titles with Ajax and PSV highlights the Champions League winner’s pedigree in his native Holland, but less successful spells with Benfica and Valencia will not be forgotten.
The Eredivisie specialist may well wish to persevere with his work at Feyenoord however, after falling just four points short of eventual winners Ajax.
Former Swansea boss Michael Laudrup may not be held in quite the esteem that saw the manager being linked with the Real Madrid job, but the Danish legend is still keenly sought after with a move to Granada currently on the cards.
A playing career at Barcelona and Real Madrid coupled with managerial spells at Getafe and Mallorca have endeared the coach to La Liga, so persuading the manager to move to the south coast of England may be a tall ask for the Southampton board.
A shift in policy and ethics may suit the appointment of Laudrup, but a disastrous run of form after the 2013 League Cup win with Swansea will be concerning for the board.
Southampton Chairman Ralph Krueger’s message of a “very swift” appointment paves the way for the appointment of out of work managers Murat Yakin and Michael Laudrup. The attraction and recent success of Swiss manager Yakin makes the manager the rightful favourite in the betting market and the former Basel coach appears to have all the credentials to become the next manager in the St Mary’s hot seat.
